International Short Film Festival Leuven 2009 Awards Announced

‘C’est dimanche’ of French film maker Samir Guesni received the Jury Award of the European Short Film Competition of the International Short Film Festival Leuven. The CANVAS Audience Award in this competition went to Romanian Gabriel Sirbu’s ‘Life’s hard’. The festival’s fifteenth edition welcomed over 8,000 visitors, a bit more than last year.

Universal Images Wins Best-in-Show at 3rd Annual 'D Show' Awards

Venerable visual effects and post-production house Universal Images took Best-in-Show honors at the third annual 'D Show'. In a ceremony held December 2 at the Max M. Fisher Music Center, UI was honored for its work on the History Channel's "The Art of War," which received a nomination in the CGI/Animation category. Additionally, Universal Images won The Craft Award for "Battle B.C.," another History Channel presentation.

An Animated Academy Salute to UPA

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ “Monday Nights with Oscar” series will present eight rarely seen United Productions of America (UPA) shorts, including Academy Award winners “Gerald McBoing-Boing” (1950) and “Mister Magoo’s Puddle Jumper” (1956) on Monday, December 14, at 7 p.m. at the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International in New York City. The program has been selected by and will be hosted by Oscar-winning animator, animation historian and author John Canemaker.

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is back at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival – the premier showcase for U.S. and international independent films, taking place January 21 to 31 – with another outstanding selection of animated shorts. Cordell Baker’s satire Runaway, Bruce Alcock’s Acadian tale, Vive la Rose, and David Coquard-Dassault’s meditation on the rhythm of human activity, Rains have been selected for this year’s festival lineup.

Academy Release The Prisoner of Zenda

n celebration of what would have been Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.’s 100th birthday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will screen “The Prisoner of Zenda” on Wednesday, December 9, at 8 p.m. at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Oscar®-winning visual effects supervisor Craig Barron and Oscar-winning sound designer Ben Burtt will examine the innovative photographic and sound effects used in creating the classic 1937 film.
