INTERNATIONAL NEWS

ATTEND THE WORLD ANIMATION CELEBRATION IN PASADENA, CA, MARCH 24-30 The event is a 3 ring circus at the Pasadena Civic Center featuring The International Business Conference of TV Animation, The Los Angeles International Animation Celebration (a festival with screenings from 10 am to 1 am), The New Animation Technology Exposition (trade show, talks, classes), ASIFA Hollywood's Animation Opportunities Expo, Industry Seminars and Workshops, Career Presentations for 3000 high school students at a time, breakfast symposiums, receptions, sponsored parties, an Easter brunch and other events.
The producers of the event haven't said too much about the content of the screenings, but their latest newsletter says they plan to show the World's Greatest Commercials, will have a program of The Outlaws of Animation (Bill Plympton, Mike Judge, John Dilworth, Bakshi, Kricfalusi, etc.) and will show 7 programs of films in competition. Bill Plympton says they will premiere his new feature.
The Business Conference will focus on opportunities for independent TV producers. They get to make "strategic alliances with the decision makers that make animation projects a reality - broadcasters, distributors and financiers." If you wish to show your work at the business conference (5 & 10 min. presentations) applications must be received by Feb. 15.
Part of the excitement will focus on events that are sponsored by companies. There is the Nickelodeon Storyboard Competition, the Klasky Csupo Screenwriting Competition, the MTV Character Screen Test, and The World's Most Outrageous Cartoon Contest. There are $48,000 in prizes from MTV, Nick and K-C. (Another flyer says over $150,000 in prizes for the entire event.) Entry forms for these events and the registration form for the International Business Conference are available by Fax. Dial (310) 986-6877 code 6789 and then press 1 to get all the documents.
Some events sound like carnival side show attractions. One will feature 2000 people making a feature in 9 hours. The work will premiere 3 days later on video. For $35 you get to participate, plus you get lunch, admission to the premiere of the film and a copy of the work on video (plus a free T-shirt).
Prices for other events are listed in their latest flyer. They range from $8.50 for a single screening to $1000 for full admission to almost everything. Admission to all screenings is $150 in advance or $200 at the door ($75/150 for students).
