Missing in Action from the Justice League are the Green Arrow, good dialogue and responsible representation of violence. Justice League and all related characters are trademarks of DC Comics © 2001. TM & © Warner Bros. and TM & © 2001 Cartoon Network. An AOL Time Warner Co.

Jarvis is going through a superhero phase so we’ve been taking in a variety of DC/Marvel related books, action figures, movies and TV shows. One show that has really got his fancy is the Justice League. This is pretty surprising to me since it’s a relatively dark and mature-wanna-be show that often addresses issues of identity, culture and race. Anyhow I’ve been watching the first season along with Jarv and I’m a bit baffled and mildly (and I mean MILDLY) miffed over the direction and inconsistencies of the show.

Extreme Violence without Death
I wrote about this two years or so ago, but it tightens my girdle every time I see massive explosions, shooting and other WMD assaults without there being any deaths. People tend to get helped up while slowing massaging their head as if they’ve got nothing more than a slight headache. The message to kids: Death is not okay, but extreme displays of violence are. Second message to kids: Extreme displays of colorful violence on other humans have no fatal or even critical effects; just a slight headache.

Dialogue
The dialogue in this show is dreadful, e.g., after Batman has dismantled a nuclear weapon (where the fug was Superman?) Green Lantern says, “You did it.” Batman, with all the originality and modesty of a basket says, “NO, we did it.” Hey kids, there’s no “I” in team. However, as some schmuck pointed out, there is an “M” and an “E”. But okay, I know I know… “What do you expect?” one of you well-intended readers will say. I say it again: I expect better and so should you — especially from Batman.

Batman
Why is Batman so pissed off all the time? Okay, his parents were murdered, but that was about 30-35 years ago. Meantime, he becomes a multi-millionaire, a successful scientist and a pretty good superhero (see… to me… Elastic Man is sort of a lame superhero). I’d say he turned out okay. Maybe he’s fed up with having to save the day in almost every episode. See Batman is the only real human of the bunch and has no superpowers so it’s kind of ironic that he often has to come in and save their alien butts from doom. It’s not even just doom-related events. These superfools can’t even seem to figure out basic stuff. For example, when doctors are trying to figure out what is wrong with an injured Aquaman; Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Martian Snoozer and Superman are all dumbfounded. Fortunately Batman arrives in time to tell the doctor that Aquaman just needs to be placed in saltwater. Well Jesus, any blind, half-brained goat coulda solved that puzzle so why the heck cant these superpowered aliens? I could see that being frustrating. I’m certain that Batman has a drinking problem too. If not, he should.

I would have to say that your problems with the show are based only off season 1. However, these problems have been fixed up for seasons 2 and 3. Here are some examples of how the show has changed in season 2: 1. Superman's strength problems have been fixed up. If they seriously need him in pain, then the villain he's fighting against has some form of Kryptonite. If the villain doesn't have any Kryptonite, then either the villain puts Superman in psychological pain or Superman just kicks ass. And if the plot requires Superman not kicking ass and the villain wouldn't sensibly have Kryptonite or be able to put Superman in psychological pain, then they have Superman stay at the Watchtower overlooking the mission. 2. The reality of why they chose the John Stewart version of Green Lantern was because no one cared about him in the comics, and thus they chose him som the team could develop him to different points than they could with Hal Jordan. And throughout Season 2, they did develop him a lot. 3. In case you didn't know, Batman has ALWAYS been angry! He does have a lighter side, but it's hardly ever shown. And in fact, his relationship with Wonder Woman in Season 2 of JL has allowed him to show his lighter side a lot more. 4. Flash has come in handy quite a bit. Yes, Superman can be used for speed, but in several episodes, Flash is useful. And since the original Flash is dead, I'm fine with the new Flash. He was annoying at first, but eventually he started providing some nice comic relief, even to the extent of making fun of the JL fanbase. Plus, in Season 3, the JL has had to expand vastly as their importance in the fate of the universe is heightened, so Superman might be fighting crime somewhere while Flash is saving the day somewhere else. And now Flash has the duty to train new members. 5. Hawkgirl is NOT a virgin. There was an implied sex scen between her and GL in the 2nd-to-last episode of Season 2. 6. As for why they chose Hawkgirl instead of Hawkman, it wasn't for PC reasons, it was for a long-running story arc in Seasons 2 and 3. Throughout Season 2, GL and HG were falling in love. However, in the Season 2 finalle (which aired in May), Hawkman and the Thanagarian armies come to Earth. It turns out Hawkgirl was acting as a spy for Thanagar, and that she and Hawkman are engaged. However, Hawkman's plan to save Thanagar involves destroying Earth. Hawkgirl then sees the light and returns to secretly help the League, who are able to destroy the base that would destroy Earth. After stopping the Thangarians' evil plot, the League has a discussion about whether or not Hawkgirl could be trusted. Before a final decision is made, Hawkgirl resigns from the League. Due to this, the League almost breaks up, but Superman decides to rebuild the League, and that rebuilt Justice League, known as the Justice League Unlimited, drives to plot and settting for Season 3. 7. And in case you want to know, Green Arrow IS in the rebuilt JLU in Season 3.

I am 16 and i agree and disagree with you on some of the issues.i think justice league is a great cartoon. batman is not always pissed , he's phelgmatic ,he protrays his image as a solitaire figure to input fear into villains .i love his sarcasm plus when he's bruce wayne you see a more caring and fun character, he's after all a playboy.yeah he saves the rest of their butts not all the time. he's a genius so i would expected him to solve the chemical solution like in the episode where the father transformed his daughter's fiancee into some kind of mutant and he solved the problem how to defeat the father when he became a monster.superman is smart too, j'onn also but you dont expect the rest of the gang to be as smart as batman they are superheroes not supergeniuses.their a team im sure he couldn't defeat the villains by himself. i wouldn't say hawkvirgin as she and green lantern are in a relationship plus that guy from her planet and i'm sure she's not a virgin. i was wondering the same thing too when i saw her "wheres hawkman?" but no prob it worked out with her, though she has anger prob. on the area of speed being supermans thing, let me clarify, im sure you didnt watch the episode of the superman's cartoon on cartoon network when flash beat superman on a race around the world though i dont remember if it was more than once they circled the globe.i like flash perverted image, that's the only place i enjoy seeing perverts in cartoon as he reminds me of miroku from INU-YASHA.i think hes funny even if you dont.superman is not as you put it a sissy, yes i though he was weaker but more organised as he and batman are the president of the JL. if you watch the 1960's JL you will realised that wonderwoman did in fact have an invisible jet,and i was surprised to know that she could fly as you were.her magic laso to me is just an ordinary piece of rope, wheres the truth in rhat? i like her cuffs though.j'onn on the other hand i like he reads mind he's smart and the last of his race which is pretty sad.green lantern is okay though i dont know why you have a problem with him. he's a war veteran they're suppose to be that way. Aquaman never confused me if he was or was not with the new JL, he has an underwater country to look after in the two episodes in which he appears. __questions______________ 1. WHO PAYS THE JUSTICE LEAGUE? ( I KNOW THEY GET MONEY FROM AN EPISODE I ATCHE D I THINK ITS BRUCE THOUGH, THEY HAVE GOTTEN ALOT MORE TEAMMATES THOUGH). 2. DID U THINK BATMAN AND WONDER WONDER HAVE SOMETHING GOING ON FROM THE EPISODE LIKE PLANET OF THE APES?( where she was trying to stop the bomb and he was frantically trying to save her when the bomb was on top of her which she had stopped and she then hugged him,and to the fact that he made the jet for her . and if i remember correct he sadi something to hawkgirl that she was in his cave .

Someone wrote a small reply about the article over at ImpossibleMan.com ... Point for point reply. Worth a read!

This article seemed like a lot of fluff. I agree with some of what was said, but come on, it seems like an attack on the show and the network. Some elements weren't even well researched...that whole thing with Green Lantern being Black as a PC move. Geez, there are a lot of different Green lanterns, if you checked the comic you would see there have been black Green Lanterns as far back as the eighties. I agree that some cartoons have faults these days, and some of what we see is pretty washed down, but come on.....it's better than those old Garfield cartoons aren't they? I feel if your going to write an article and just bash everything, whats the point? To tell everybody how ridiculous everything is? Isn't it just as ridiculous to spend the time bashing something that you feel is ridiculous? It's too easy to take whats out there apart and demolish it, Anyone can do that. You just find the faults. I think it's an amateurish attempt to be clever...I'm not defending the cartoon, I'm just saying the state of Animation has been somewhat cruddy for awhile now...what's new?

Well...I do agree with some of your comments. But when reading this article, I took it more for laughs than to be serious. But I do say, kudos to you and it brought a greatr sense of joy to my day. Thanks.

Your article reminded me of a comment a friend made to me while we were traveling in Asia years ago about how most comic books in the world--outside the West--are religious. Which got me thinking about the various world Pantheons, the symbolism/symbolic power of the "Gods", cartoons, Jung, etc. Batman, Superman, Spiderman, etc. are our Zeus, Ganesha, Lady of Guadalupe, whatever. OUR very own pagan pantheon, believe it or not ... ask any 5 year old who they'd rather be, Jesus, the Beatles or Batman and it will all make awkward sense. It's a shame the makers of the Justice League haven't yet made the parallel. It would give the writers a shot in the arm, potentially a sense of responsibility and certainly add more meaning, drama and action. Reading "Iron John" by Robert Bly wouldn't hurt any, either. Stay crazy, CR.

Was this, Animation Pimp being serious? Good Lord. Wow. Come on man, this isn't the SuperFriends of the 70's. I'll say season 2 of JL defines the show as one the best American cartoons on, period.. "Why is Batman angry?" Good god, I heard Joel Schumaker ask that prior to his "new: Batman films. Animation Pimp, seriously if your not joking in that article you are way off track.

I just wanted to let you know that I thought your article on the Justice League animated series was spot on. I mean, talk about turning an exciting and colorful collection of characters into a bland and monotonous cast. I recently stopped watching JL for this very reason. Did you see the episode where the League fought Gorilla Grodd and a whole bunch of other villains in a football arena? That was the worst and last episode I had ever seen, almost as if they lifted the storyline from a night of playing Street Fighter II. It's not often (in fact I can't even think of another example) that we have an american cartoon whos episodes are specifically created to run over the 30 min mark. And it's a real shame that JL hasn't taken advantage of this opportunity. Although I did enjoy the 'pilot' of the series, I had misgivings about the cast similar to yours. About John Stewart; not only does he share the same name as a known comedian (god knows what kind of discussions they had about the potential confusion there), but he's gotta be the most boring Green Lantern out of the entire DC universe. Hawkgirl? Yeah, 'school-marmish' was the perfect way to describe her. I don't think she's bitchy. Whiny yes, but if she was bitchy at least she'd be more interesting. I'm all for some strong female characters in my superhero cartoons to balance out the level of testosterone. But what testosterone? Frankly, these characters are all andrognous in terms of personality. It sure seems like Cartoon Network wanted to cover all ther bases and make sure that there was total equality between everybody. I mean, thinking back to any random episode, I can't remember who did what or how. All I remember is: the Justice League comes to fight the bad buy. They all fight, the Justice League wins. What's more annoying: there's no dynamic between the characters, they don't fight with each other OR get along. They're just there! It's as if when the lights go off they all just sit around the table in silence until the next emergency. Maybe it's just the fanboy in me that's nit picking- no, I take that back. It's the adult in me. And maybe that's where the problem lies. I suppose I'm just disappointed that the creators of JL could have come up with (or even lifted from the comic) some great storylines and dialogue, but instead opted for homogenizing the Justice League into a PC friendly, dumbed down, version of itself (since when does Batman smile and crack jokes?). Anyway, compliments on the article.

Nit-Pick much? And pick up a damn comic book sometime...that is the revamped Aquaman from the recent DC comics. If you're going to review an animated show, do some background research before you decide to shred it.

What a silly, funny little editorial. I'm assuming he is being sarcastic. It sounds like he is longing for the SuperFriends. LOL!!!
