Speaking For Zimself: A Conversation With Jhonen Vasquez

Martin "Dr. Toon" Goodman invades the mind of Jhonen Vasquez, the creator of Invader Zim, to discuss Zim, Jhonen's ideas and inspirations, and the ups and downs of producing his first animated series.

Earth has been invaded by a hostile alien but don't lose any sleep; the invader in question is Zim, the most hapless would-be conqueror in the universe. Although Zim is supremely confident that the world will fall at his tiny green feet, neither he nor his malfunctioning robot GIR can get through a typical day without inflicting disasters of galactic proportions upon themselves. Invader Zim is one of Nickelodeon's hottest new series and it originates from the wickedly fertile mind of writer/artist Jhonen Vasquez, best known for his comic book series Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and SQUEE! (rightfully the world's most phobic little boy). Jhonen recently spoke with me about Zim, his ideas and inspirations, and the ups and downs of producing his first animated series.

Dr. Toon: Let's start out with how Invader Zim came to Nickelodeon. Mary Harrington contacted you after checking out SQUEE! What did Ms. Harrington tell you she liked about the SQUEE! series?

Jhonen Vasquez: I think she saw a certain amount of "kid relatability," mainly in the way I handled the kids and the way Squee's behavior was an overall mood. I don't think anyone would ever want to make SQUEE! into a kids' show -- I don't think anyone would be that insane -- but I think she liked the way I handled the characters and the way there was actual character as opposed to just sick humor. Something in that made her take a chance on coming to me and asking me to come up with the idea for a show. I'm not certain whether it was with the intention of converting SQUEE! into a series -- I like to think it wasn't.

Dr. T: I understand that you came up with the idea for Invader Zim for Harrington on the spot.

JV: Pretty much, yeah. At the time, when I was asked if I had any ideas for a show I had been working on SQUEE! and had done seven Johnnys [the Homicidal Manic]. I was about to finish up SQUEE! and figured, "Yeah, it's time to do something different." That night after I had the initial conversation where I had said, "Sure, I'll try to think up something," I just sat there in bed -- didn't sleep, just sat there thinking -- and came up with the basic idea for the show; Zim being the outcast alien who just doesn't see himself as anything but the greatest creature ever to exist. Zim, Dib and Gaz pretty much came full-formed and the rest of the show just built around it. The whole idea came that one night, in just about an hour or so.

Dr. T: I notice that in SQUEE! there are a few stories featuring malevolent but totally incompetent aliens. Was that sort of the jumping-off point for you?

JV: Oh, yeah, I love that! I love the idea of anything that's considered to be a superior being -- they've got all this amazing technology -- and yet ultimately they're still just idiots! They're just guys piloting this gigantic spaceship. You get the idea that they stole it rather than built it themselves. They haven't evolved beyond being driven by their personalities. That's what Zim is. He's got this incredible arsenal at his hand and the only thing that's stopping him from destroying the Earth is the fact that he's a moron! Anyone else in that position, there would be no show because Earth would be destroyed in the first episode! It's more fun working with Zim as an idiot.

Jhonen When i first read your meterial it was the bad art collection, and i was about nine years old. Thinks You and my friend that happens to be older then me and buys most of your work my mind has be currtpted just a little bit more then i was before. i am 15 now and my friend is like 17 or something and we have recently started a comic of our own...I will tell you about it even though you will not care HA i win. But before i start telling you about i just want you to know that i am not expecting you to like it or promote it or even read this message in the first place but anyway Its about two kids based on me and my friend and we are really lazy in real life and the comic, but like one idea that i have start our comic on was i always go over my friends house like on the weekends and stuff and he always falls asleep before i do, and when he does he has this little german stuffed dog that he has had for ever and he sleeps with it still. so i thought it would be mean if i took it away from him when he fell asleep and cut off his head but when i take it from him he wakes up soon and finds me in the basement in a corner with stuffing everywhere and me giggle madly. Cam (my friend)kind of snaps and goes on a rampage and destroys his home with me, his dog, cat, brother all lying around him in peices and he starts to giggle madly..... Well that was the outline bascicly of our first comic and the reason that i wrote this was becasue i was wondering if you had any advice for me and the comic the email adress that i put up top is Cams So feel free to send him like wierd stuff if you want.. later man keep up the discusting yet good work...

This is a message for Matthew L Arnold: Unless you are, at most, fourteen years old, your pretension is unforgivable. Come on, man, what's with all the inverted commas? "People"? "Fans"? It's unnecessary. You claim to have no interest in the details of Jhonen Vasquez's personal life, yet you make a point of including his middle initial in this statement. The arrogance with which you wrote your comment is so tiresome. You share an appreciation for this guy's work with many other people, so for chrissakes just share, rather than stroking your dangerous attitude and incendiary wit (note my sarcasm) with the eyes of good-natured readers of this article. Also, in response to your querie, the term 'fan' in this context in an abbreviation of 'fanatic' - it's a term commonly accepted as a part of this language and has little to do with oscillation. I feel its time to bow out gracefully, but your comment really pissed me off. So here, to add a colourful pettiness to my post, I should like to mention that your poor spelling and grammar takes away any resonance your words might have had. And while you sigh with a defiant contempt for the obsequiousness of your fellow posters, I wonder if you realise the transparency of your own grovelling. So in closing, I implore you - Get over yourself.

People suck, whenever they ask me what I want to be when I grow up my response is,"I want to be like Jhonen Vasquez, deal with it." Thanks for being so superior Jhonen!! May the Earth Worm Babies worship your head!!

hell-o "people". I feel that you "humans" do not care about or understand the depth of Johnen Vasquez! What I mean by depth is that your puiny meat minds can not comprehend the truth behind all of his works. I really hate it when people call themselves "fans" of the works he bled out his soul. Can anyone give me the definition of the word fan? do not fear for I have the solution to your sad misfortuine, a fan is an inanimate object that ocilatates backand forth to keep the stale air that is around it circulated!Duh?!To be honest with you,I am not fan but only an appreicataive reader of great litatary works and JTHM is one of them.I am sorry if I do not make that mindless droning noise when I speak to you.I do not care about what JCV's lifestile concist of or what he chooses to do with his life!In short everyone is lame,so am I,the world is not a bad place, stay stupid, and all of you fans keep your stupid sweatey little middle schooler friends cool!!! Finaly, leave the man alone and stop bothering me with your dronig noises.... (your stranger) [Matthew L Arnold]

As most of us obviously agree, Jhonen is a genius. A very busy genius who WILL NEVER READ THESE COMMENTS!!! Just thought I'd point that out. But there are lots of geniuses like Johnen who are no longer recognized because their stories don't come with pictures for the average 20th century American brain, which is made of pudding and Red dye number 40.He even mentioned one. Share the wealth of idol worship here...please.
