Speaking For Zimself: A Conversation With Jhonen Vasquez

Martin "Dr. Toon" Goodman invades the mind of Jhonen Vasquez, the creator of Invader Zim, to discuss Zim, Jhonen's ideas and inspirations, and the ups and downs of producing his first animated series.

Earth has been invaded by a hostile alien but don't lose any sleep; the invader in question is Zim, the most hapless would-be conqueror in the universe. Although Zim is supremely confident that the world will fall at his tiny green feet, neither he nor his malfunctioning robot GIR can get through a typical day without inflicting disasters of galactic proportions upon themselves. Invader Zim is one of Nickelodeon's hottest new series and it originates from the wickedly fertile mind of writer/artist Jhonen Vasquez, best known for his comic book series Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and SQUEE! (rightfully the world's most phobic little boy). Jhonen recently spoke with me about Zim, his ideas and inspirations, and the ups and downs of producing his first animated series.

Dr. Toon: Let's start out with how Invader Zim came to Nickelodeon. Mary Harrington contacted you after checking out SQUEE! What did Ms. Harrington tell you she liked about the SQUEE! series?

Jhonen Vasquez: I think she saw a certain amount of "kid relatability," mainly in the way I handled the kids and the way Squee's behavior was an overall mood. I don't think anyone would ever want to make SQUEE! into a kids' show -- I don't think anyone would be that insane -- but I think she liked the way I handled the characters and the way there was actual character as opposed to just sick humor. Something in that made her take a chance on coming to me and asking me to come up with the idea for a show. I'm not certain whether it was with the intention of converting SQUEE! into a series -- I like to think it wasn't.

Dr. T: I understand that you came up with the idea for Invader Zim for Harrington on the spot.

JV: Pretty much, yeah. At the time, when I was asked if I had any ideas for a show I had been working on SQUEE! and had done seven Johnnys [the Homicidal Manic]. I was about to finish up SQUEE! and figured, "Yeah, it's time to do something different." That night after I had the initial conversation where I had said, "Sure, I'll try to think up something," I just sat there in bed -- didn't sleep, just sat there thinking -- and came up with the basic idea for the show; Zim being the outcast alien who just doesn't see himself as anything but the greatest creature ever to exist. Zim, Dib and Gaz pretty much came full-formed and the rest of the show just built around it. The whole idea came that one night, in just about an hour or so.

Dr. T: I notice that in SQUEE! there are a few stories featuring malevolent but totally incompetent aliens. Was that sort of the jumping-off point for you?

JV: Oh, yeah, I love that! I love the idea of anything that's considered to be a superior being -- they've got all this amazing technology -- and yet ultimately they're still just idiots! They're just guys piloting this gigantic spaceship. You get the idea that they stole it rather than built it themselves. They haven't evolved beyond being driven by their personalities. That's what Zim is. He's got this incredible arsenal at his hand and the only thing that's stopping him from destroying the Earth is the fact that he's a moron! Anyone else in that position, there would be no show because Earth would be destroyed in the first episode! It's more fun working with Zim as an idiot.

Johnen has such a beautiful mind. I have tried to think of things for comics but all I came up with was sick comics - how does he do it!? The mixture of twisted humor, randomness, and disturbing ideas while remaining original and having 'true value' (as some of those weird TV censor people who tell you what your kids should watch say); it's amazing. And please don't call me a kiss-ass ('cuz I'm not) for saying so but, the artwork and detail (especially on facial expressions) is extraordinary - I was a little surprised when I was reading the JTHM comics with how Johnny's face matched exactly with the mood of the comic, unlike in a few cartoons when something that the charecters are supposed to think is horrible, and they'll be crying, but smiling at the same time. So really, to put it simply- wow. (So I was a little late on posting, so sue me!)

HII i write more! i have a special message to a girl named Leyna Pelham. The ROBOT IS NAMED GIR!! Dib iz Zim's rival! just cluing ya' in hon'. Anywayz, i just read the interveiw which i think i should've done before i e-mailed a comment. JV is cooler than i thought! he's even cooler to fill me in that i am NOT alone in hateing the very essense of Scooby Doo! I never knew he wrote comics! i will be sure to read them! I feel sooooooooo much better that i'm not alone in likeing all the gross, disgusting, hilariouse stuff he does. I have to ask though, where did GIR come from? he's my favorite character! Well next to Gaz. She totally covers the whole GIRLZ KICK ASS!!! attitude! I would absolutley adore to see what it's like to create an epesode of Invader ZIM. Even though i'd have better luck getting to see the spongebob crew (Nick sucks 4 playing favoritism on the sponge)than seeing my all time favorite show comeing to life. i would love to meet the voices of all the characters. Especially Zim's voice! It would be awsome to watch Zim's voice come to life. Well i'd better shut mu trap and not let my wishes be exposed. If anyone feels the same way i do e-mail me at kaity9999@hotmail.com. sucky name i know, i didn't choose it. Jhonen u rule! i love Zim, and alwayz will. Please don't confuse me with a dernged fan, cuz' i'm not, just an unusually hyper teenage girl who has alot in common with Gaz and GIR. so 4 now i say see ya', i gotta do the HW i put off to watch Zim try 2 conquer earth. toodles

Um... (i suck at these things!) I just have One thing to say, Jhonen Vasquez iz THE coolest! ok i have lots more to say. I have to say that i will very upset when Zim finally leaves the world of TV. It's practically the only show i put my HW off to watch! JH should look for another channel to air Zim, Nick had their chance. I won't feel happy knowing Zim and Dib's rivalry will be cut short, or GIR's love for tacos, or Gaz's gameslave quest. The show is crazy and stupid! It's why i love it so much! We spend all of our time learning about the important things in life, that we never relize the stupid one's could be important too. JH brought Zim,GIR,Dib,and Gaz into this world to show us that. I will tape every episode and never forget any of them! Nick is so stupid to cancell them! There's nothing inapropriet in the show! May Jhonen Vasquez find a TV station that appreciates Zim&company and leave Nick in the dust! Dude! good luck! never stop makeing Zim's life crazy! May Zim one day conquer SOMETHING, and GIR always have a moose and a taco in hand. May Gaz always have batteries for her gameslave to kick that Iggens kid's but, and let Dib prove that he isn't crazy and is right about aliens out there! Gotta love'm for keepn' at it! Zim iz da'bomb and that's all there iz to it! So this is an upset 13 year old sayn' Dude, u rock, and keep Zim alive! Love 'ya man! Latter Dayz' .

Man! I fricken love Zim!!!!! JKFhaugh! Ahh!!!! Okay I had to let that out. But really, I think that GIR is so lucky to have such a master. And by the way, GIR is so cute that it's disturbing, disturbing is GOOD FOR YOU!!! I have a Zim keychain that I actually take with me everywhere for goodluck. Alright then! It's the best thing and the only thing that i've ever loved/liked/obsessed over WHATEVER, on tv in my whole 16 years of this "LIFE?!" One thing that gets me so upset is that almost everyone in my school has never even heard of Invader Zim!!! CRAZY MOFO'S!!! Damn man I should kidnap them all and force them to watch it!! And they'll get no pizza till they've watched aallllll oofffff iiittttttt HEhEHEHheeEEe. Alright it's late. Ah..nope, nevermind it's not. So, if you ever see this Jhonen Vasquez! You amazing crazy man haha. Then I hope that you know that I LOVE YOUR SHOW!!!!!!!!!! I'll always love it and remember it even when my brain is decaying and i'm waiting in line on my death bed of DOOM! ^_^ Byeee! -Diabla By the way. I've always wondered if you had some kind of thing for monkey's and poo. YAY!!! INVADER ZIM WILL NEVER DIE!! (Damn I never give up, okay. NO!)

Yeah, an animated short/feature about devi would be great. i mean, it's another great project by jhonen and rikki, so it definately has potential - though it seems jhonen is quite reluctant to start another animated project - understandably. it could be more mature though - by that i mean gross - it wouldn't have to be restricted to a younger audience the way zim is.

I think I want to marry him now. Just kidding, really, but (and I'm going to sound juvenile now) dude...he is so COOL. I mean, he likes anime and hates scooby doo, AND has an awesome and twisted sense of humor. What more could you want in a man?

I truly believe that a movie or short revolving around Devi and Nny should be created, or just Devi, or just Nny. It'd be interesting to have actual voices accompanying the art. All I can do is envision my friend Jon reading the comics aloud making me read Devi. Oy ve. I don't see why Invader Zim was cancelled... I regarded that as one of Jhonen's greatest accomplishments, aside from having the balls to do something he loves. Very few people get away with that crime these days, you know, thinking for themselves. I applaud Jhonen and hope either a new network picks up Zim, or they all burn in hell. Ciao, internet junkies o' the world.

It is always interesting to me to read an interveiw with Jhonen Vasquez. His outlook on things is certainly brought about in a uniquely intelligent way. At the same time, he always manages to veer off of a serious note, and bring about the creepy yet always comedic sense of humor he posseses. Reading these interveiws always seem to leave me going off to bed at 2 AM smiling.
