Disney Goes Open Source with Ptex

Ptex has introduced a new texture mapping system at Disney that is now available as an open source.

Naturally, Ptex is integral to Disney's next animated feature, Tangled. "It's pretty much on the surface of every object," Hendrickson says. "The interesting thing with Disney is that…we have a lot of people who do painting and texture assignment on our geometry is our bread and butter-- it's how we do what we do. And so this technology is an enabler for us and also an enabler for the rest of the industry. It's just good for us to put this type of technology out there so that when people come to Disney when we recruit will know more about what Ptex is rather than having to go through a laborious training session."

ptex.us (the article includes the link) should provide more information and appears to let you download Ptex. Although, I can't be sure of how or the legalities of doing so. I recommend reading the Ptex license.

There is also a demonstration of the painting capabilities of Ptex on youtube. If you search for Ptex, you should find it. Unfortunately it is more of a demonstration than a tutorial.

As for how to use it with Maya, I don't know.  I hope this was helpful anyway.

Sounds like a good idea to me, hopefully the idea will get some legs before long and really take off.

From what I understand, this is pretty cool. It's really cool that Disney is sharing their innovations. It's a real throw back to old Disney when Walt would share and discuss the studios techniques.

The only is, I don't know how to use it or even install it. Is it an application? I use Maya, is there a plugin for it? If there is please someone direct me to it.
