2003 TV Wrap-Up, What’s in Store for 2004

Joe Strike looks at daytime TV successes of 2003 in the U.S and what we can expect from 2004. He talks to industry vet Fred Seibert and network pundits at Kids’ WB!, FOX BOX, Disney/ABC, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, as well as Linda Simensky, in her new role at PBS.
Posted In | Magazines: AnimationWorld

With the PBS Kids 2004 schedule essentially locked in place, Simensky is looking ahead to 2005 and a possible new series that, like Postcards from Buster, would be a live-action/animation combination. As for the overall programming mix, “there are certain shows that I really like and some that may not be as strong as the others. My goal is to find a quiet, unobtrusive home for the weaker ones and emphasize the ones I feel are the strongest.” Simensky sums up her mission by observing, “PBS has always had the goal of developing iconic characters for kids and to find the next kids’ icon – the next Arthur, or the next Big Bird.” Or perhaps, the next Powerpuff Girls.

From his vantage point, Seibert sees another big Pokémon-style breakout hit somewhere just over the horizon. “It’s been a few years. SpongeBob was the last real one. He’s really the first superstar character of the modern generation, which is really interesting; in 10 years of unbelievable successes, only one superstar has emerged from the pack. Yu-Gi-Oh! tried, it did really well, but didn’t really break out in a permanent way.”

Technology-wise, Seibert predicts, “we’re going to see a lot more CGI and CGI-influenced stuff on TV. It’s getting easier and easier for traditionally trained people to make their way in the CGI world. Clearly costs are going down in CGI production. You’re able to do more CGI stuff on a TV budget.

“I also think we’re close to the end of The Simpsons. How that’s going to shake out in terms of replacements, we’ll see. More and more cable people are coming on in primetime animation next year. It’ll be interesting to see what the role of cable will be, but it’s clear that there’s still a lot of adult primetime animation to come.”

Joe Strike is a NYC-based writer/producer with a background in TV promotion and a lifelong interest in animation. He is writing a children’s novel.

Is it THAT big of a deal????? Only the TITLE was changed! You people need lives... (sigh) :... after those darn 4kids...", you people say. It makes me so MAD! What if THEY have children of their own and they just want to make these anime shows appropriate for them!? And they DO NOT just like to "rape" anime or so you say. Who started that whole "rape" thing anyway!? It's only a cartoon for crying out loud! And yes, it IS a cartoon. Don't say," Anime is NOT just a cartoon...", because it IS. It's only a different TYPE of cartoon. All you freaking 4kids haters should just SHUT UP!!!

I love the idea of putting Tokyo Mew Mew on the tv, but HOLLYWOOD Mew Mew! That's ludacris! American children should think outside their own cultural box! They can handle Japanese names! It is an insult to Japan changing TOKYO MEW MEW to HOLLYWOOD MEW MEW! It might even somehow be educational. Also, please don't cut out too much, or that would make the plot boring and lifeless.

I am very upset at what I have just read. Hollywood Mew Mew? I'm beginning to think that maybe there is a subtle hatred towards the Japanese culture. TOKYO Mew Mew is a wonderful show and a wonderful manga with strong characters. I'm not sure if it's clear by the actual title, but the 5 girls are living in Japan. I am in shock that anyone would even think of releasing Tokyo Mew Mew and giving it the name Hollywood Mew Mew. The same thing happened in the U.S. release of Card Captor Sakura (or, Card Captors as it was called here). They changed the fact that Sakura & friends were living in Japan by changing Japanese names & including such dialogue as "Funky lunch Maddison." It was even more ridiculous that they were trying to gear Card Captor Sakura, a mostly girl's show, to a boy audience as well by changing the title to prevent Sakura from being the center of attention. They also began the series on the episode in which Li Syaoran first appears. Heaven forbid a girl be the main character of the show. I fear that what they are doing is destroying another wonderful show with the release of Hollywood Mew Mew. I can guarantee that there are other ways to reach a female audience, especially through anime. Take tips from Cartoon Network. They released great titles to watch, including Witch Hunter Robin, Cowboy Bebop, and .hack//SIGN. Cartoon Network has the brains and courage to release these shows and they have been very successful in the process. Also, many girls watch these shows as well. You're talking to one right now. I will tell you that by releasing Tokyo Mew Mew and defiling its name, you WILL be loosing a large fan base. Those of us who love Tokyo Mew Mew and have a deep appreciation, not rejection, of the Japanese culture will be very angered if this show is released the way it is. Give it up FOX and let Cartoon Network show you the real way anime should be released.

I love anime! But really, this kills Tokyo Mew Mew! I swear! I may only be a dumb american... but really! 4Kids or whatever you people call it is killing too much anime! Im really pissed, I mean like, I only have read like 3 books of Tokyo Mew Mew, and found out the ending online... but if you guys are really gonna change it that much... i'm not gonna watch the dumb series! I would rather take a trip to Japan or whatever and see it in japanese! (-_-) - Natalie, a blonde anime freak in Florida thats a bit strange for an 11 year old... but WHO REALLY CARES!?
