James Collins Joins Guava

Visual effects studio Guava has signed seasoned animator and designer James Collins to its roster. He recently completed a spot for GMC via Lowe Worldwide with Guava. He comes from Click 3X, where he rebuilt the CG department and headed the team.

"In addition to providing an environment that is conducive to creativity, Guava offers a very talented staff," said Collins. "I am eager to contribute my skills while also learning from the experienced artists here. At Guava, I hope to help clients nurture their ideas and solve their creative needs."

Beginning June 12, 2007, two of the biggest anime distributors in the U.S., FUNimation and GeneonEnt., will join current Xbox LIVE partner ADV Films with popular shows, movies, gamer pics and themes. FUNimation will provide the epic adventure series SAMURAI 7, adapted from Akira Kurosawa's legendry film SEVEN SAMURAI. Additional films coming from FUNimation include TRINITY BLOOD, GUNSLINGER GIRL and BASILISK. Geneon Ent. will provide Xbox LIVE with the U.S. HD debut of the anime classic AKIRA. Arena Animation Announces AAASP 2007

Arena Animation, one of India's largest animation and multimedia training institutions, announced the launch of the brand new version of its 2 1/2 year high-end animation-training course, the Arena Animation Academy Specialist Program 2007 (AAASP 2007).

The course is modeled around the needs of the industry with each semester having an integrated project to give the students an exposure to the practical application of tools and software.

Azureus to Distribute Anime from Geneon Ent.

Azureus, a global leader in aggregating and distributing long-form, high quality video via the Internet's most popular media peer-to-peer (P2P) application, struck a content agreement with Geneon Ent. to release popular anime series on its digital media platform. The agreement includes an episode of LUPIN III, "To Be or Nazi Be" (episode 3) that couldn't be aired on TV because of its outrageous storyline. Azureus will make the programs available on its video sharing site, Vuze (www.vuze.com), a premier broadband distribution platform.

Rintaro, Madhouse & Friedman Join Forces on 3D Penguin Feature

Anime director Rintaro (METROPOLIS, X: THE MOVIE, SPACE PIRATE CAPTAIN HARLOCK) and Japanese production house Madhouse (X/1999, X: THE MOVIE, METROPOLIS, TRIGUN) along with Paris-based Denis Friedman Prods. have announced a new CGI-animated feature, YONNA YONNA PEGUIN, reports VARIETY. The film is set to debut in Japan in December 2008.

The story features a little girl who gets sucked into a fantasy world populated by goblins who believe that their savior will be a penguin.

Entertainment and design company Imaginary Forces (IF) was recently called upon by Walt Disney Pictures to create a teaser for its upcoming feature, NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS. The teaser breaks today (May 25, 2007) with the premiere of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END.

In the NATIONAL TREASURE sequel, treasure hunter Benjamin Franklin Gates (Nicolas Cage) looks to discover the truth behind the assassination of Abraham Lincoln by uncovering the 18 missing pages from assassin John Wilkes Booth's diary, and embarks on an adventure with many surprising twists.

Compact Disc to Produce 3D Soccer Film GoaaaaaL!

New Delhi-based Compact Disc India (CDIL), an entertainment animation company, has signed a $17.85 million contract with Los Angeles-based Motion Pixel Corp. to develop a 3D feature film, GOAAAAAL!, to be released during the FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Assoc.) World Cup soccer finals in 2009, reports the TIMES NEWS NETWORK.

Budgeted at roughly $20.15 million, the 90-minute film will feature the voices of Brazilian soccer star Ronaldo, along with Hollywood stars Ben Kingsley and Catherine Zeta Jones in the world's first animated film on soccer.

Imageworks Expands into New Mexico

Sony Pictures Imageworks officially announced that it is expanding into Albuquerque, New Mexico, "to harness the power of scalable capacity and favorable economics."

According to the LOS ANGELES TIMES, more than 100 jobs will relocate from Culver City to New Mexico, which is providing a combined 25% rebate on taxable production and post-production expenses.

Sony TV Launches Anime Channel in Germany

Sony Pictures Television Int'l (SPTI) announced that its anime channel, Animax, is set to launch in Germany. The announcement was made following the signing of an agreement with Unity Media, the first distribution partner for Animax in the country. The channel will commence broadcasting from early June 2007 and will be available to digital pay-tv subscribers in the German regions of North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse, which have more than five million cable households. Further roll out of the channel through other distribution partners is to follow over the coming months.

Taffy Ent. Says HOLA for Latin America Distribution

Taffy Ent. has brought on Canadian-based HOLA Ent. to rep its properties for distribution free TV broadcasters and video distributors in Latin America. Taffy will continue handling distribution of the pay TV rights for its catalog. New agency deal begins with LA Screenings in May 2007.

Taffy Ent. has already closed deals with several Latin America broadcasters, including TV Globo (FANTASTIC FOUR and LITTLE VAMPIRE) and TVN Chile (CODE LYOKO and FANTASTIC FOUR).

ASIFA-East Awards Night In New York

ASIFA-East, the New York chapter of the International Animation Society, held its 38th annual Awards screening Sunday night, May 6, 2007. A near-capacity crowd filled a Greenwich Village auditorium to celebrate and screen the winners in four different categories.

First, second and third-place prizes were awarded in each category, as well as honors for excellence in various crafts. The overall Best in Show award went to Don Hertzfeldt's EVERYTHING WILL BE OKAY, starring Hertzfeldt's well-known stick figures in a dryly observed story of one man's mysterious illness.
